The Greenwashing Epidemic

Greenwashing is spending more time and money claiming to be "green" through advertising and marketing rather than implementing business practices that minimize environmental impact.

Many consumer product companies state that they support recycling, while not doing anything to consume recycled resins. What they really mean is that they support "other" companies recycling their plastic waste. Usually, these statements are made by the marketing or PR departments who know very little about plastic recycling.

In 2017 Walmart paid to the state of California $1 million to settle a lawsuit alleging it illegally sold plastic products in stores and online that were misleadingly labeled “biodegradable” or “compostable”. The selling of items with disingenuous labeling is in violation of California law.

It's important to distinguish between companies who just talk about recycling plastics versus those that actually make the effort to reuse their plastic waste and use as much recycled plastics as possible in their new products.
